WHAT IS JUSTSTORIES?
STORYTELLING FOR IMPACT
Learn about the science of visual storytelling, and why video is one of the most powerful tools we have to build engagement, empathy, and action for social change, so that you can understand how best to use video to reach your audience and inspire them to act.
AUDIO + VIDEO SKILLS
The program offers six modules with step-by-step guides and techniques for impactful audio and video-based storytelling, using a device you probably already have in your pocket, so that you can make a powerful short video about your story or your work.
LIVE COACHING + SUPPORT
We offer twice monthly live coaching calls with our team, including our founder Kristin Adair, a filmmaker, lawyer and activist with experience in non-profit advocacy, so you can ask questions, integrate what you're learning, and get feedback on the videos you're creating.
WHY MAKE VIDEOS?
The short answer: YES.
Video is everywhere. The best way to get people engaged with your message and inspired to take action, donate, buy, share, or support your mission is to reach them through emotional, character-driven multimedia storytelling. Research shows that viewers who watched this type of video were more likely to take action and donate than those who watched a dry or non-story driven piece of content.
We have been helping non-profits and changemakers tell their stories and amplify their work through visual media for nearly a decade. It works.
Here are just a few ways that we have seen video bring transformative change:
• For one legal services non-profit, adding a story-driven video centering the voices of the community they serve to their Giving Tuesday campaign helped them "blow their fundraising goal out of the water" compared to prior years.
• We helped an advocacy organization create a series of videos sharing personal stories in support of pending legislation to end juvenile life sentencing in their state. They shared the videos with every legislator and the bill passed!
• We have partnered with defense attorneys to produce short biographical films shown to judges to support resentencing petitions for more than a dozen incarcerated people. In the vast majority of cases, their clients have been released, some after decades in prison.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long will it take to complete the JUSTstories course?
The course is self-paced. There are six modules, each with approximately 1 hour of video lessons, an exercise worksheet, and links to supplemental materials like articles to read, external videos for insight and inspiration, and module review. If you are planning to work through the program while creating your own short, world-changing video (which we recommend!), you should expect to take a few weeks per module to complete the exercises and walk through the steps we recommend to produce your own video.
Do I need expensive equipment to take this course and make impactful videos?
Not necessarily! We recommend using a smartphone to create your world-changing video. Most any modern smartphone with video capabilities can be used to create impactful video, if you know some basic techniques. We do have a list of recommended equipment (with options at different price points) - including microphones, tripod or stabilization tools, lights, etc. - to add onto your device to significantly improve the quality of your audio and video. If you have a budget to purchase some of these key items, we'll show you how to make more professional-looking video using these simple tools.
If you already have a camera (like a DSLR or other digital camera) that you would like to use to create video content, you can also benefit from the storytelling tools and techniques, both technical and impact-focused, that we share in this course.
Can I participate in this course if I've never created a video before?
Yes! In fact, we created this course for YOU. We'll walk you through creating a short video step-by-step. You will need to also learn some basic functions of your own smartphone (as all devices are different) and we'll give you links to supplemental tutorials and resources that can help if you're newer to creating video.
What if I need support or have questions while I'm going through the course?
We have several options for getting more support as you work through the course:
• Join our community here on the course platform to talk to our team as well as other changemakers like you who are learning to create impactful video content;
• Talk to us live! We offer twice monthly live coaching calls via Zoom where you can ask questions, get advice about your videos or share what you've been creating for inspiration and feedback;
• Email us! We're happy to answer questions and if you're looking for more support, we can provide additional consulting, production or editing services.
What if I don't have time to produce and edit a whole video myself?
We get it, world-changers are busy! If you want to learn some basic principles of storytelling for impact and how to target your multimedia content for audience and impact, you can still benefit from working through the JUSTstories course materials in your free moments. We also have a full-service social impact production company (Unchained Stories) that provides video production and editing services. We can offer a package for additional consulting to support you in developing an impactful video or film from new or existing content. We can also take new or existing video and edit it professionally to a polished video or film, or we can produce a video in collaboration with you from start to finish!
